Our beginnings date back to 1972. The Hamptons, then, were a group of very distinct communities known, not only for their unique beauty, but for their agricultural and seafood industries. The term, “trade parade” had not even entered our vocabulary for many years to come.
Two East Hampton school teachers, Robert Wilford and John Haessler opened The Seafood Shop on Montauk Highway in Wainscott. Back then, there was a general consensus that fresh seafood could only be gotten off the boats in Montauk or Three Mile Harbor. In the beginning, it was just a summer business, as were many. John and Robert, eventually, left their teaching careers to keep the shop open year round.
After some time, John Haessler became the sole owner of the store. His determined work ethic, friendly personality and family-like staff made The Seafood Shop the most sought after seafood market, to chefs and all, on the east end.
On January 1st, 2000, after almost 30 years of dedicating his life to the progress of the store, John Haessler decided to put the same energy towards his family and hobbies. Colin Mather, after spending 13 years under John’s tutelage, became the new owner. Colin has made a few physical changes, but the core motto of The Seafood Shop remains the same, “The Freshest and Finest”. That motto extends to everything we do and our customers are always treated like family.
The life of The Seafood Shop reads like a story, with lots of colorful characters. So come on in and get your name on the page. We’ll be looking for you.
